Recently, members of the Taunton Leisure team travelled to the Peak District to attend the Outdoor & Social retailer training event. Set in the beautiful Hope Valley, the event brought together some of the most respected outdoor brands in the industry, along with specialist instructors and retailers from across the UK.

For us, it was an invaluable opportunity to step away from the shop floor and the website, and spend time learning directly from the people who design and build the equipment we recommend every day.
Events like this help ensure that when you ask us for advice, it is grounded in real-world knowledge, hands-on testing and genuine understanding.
Real Training, Real Testing, Real Experience
Over several days, the team took part in guided hikes, trail runs, navigation sessions and climbing activities organised by Mountain School. These practical sessions were not just about enjoying the hills. They were designed to help us understand how different products perform in real conditions, and how customers can stay safer and more comfortable outdoors.

We also attended a wide range of technical workshops. Topics included:
- waterproof technologies and the future of PFAS-free treatments
- water safety and filtration systems
- stove fuel efficiency and safe cooking techniques
- clothing construction and insulation testing
- tent pitching skills and design
This level of detailed product education allows our staff to give more tailored advice in-store and online.
Learning Directly From Leading Outdoor Brands
One of the highlights was spending time with suppliers who shared not only product features, but also the thinking behind them. Understanding a brand’s purpose and values helps us match the right equipment to the right customer.
From tent design sessions to footwear testing on steep, muddy trails, the event provided a rare opportunity to see the full range of products we stock in one place.
The Hilleberg training session proved particularly memorable. Being guided through the full tent range, learning about materials and construction methods, and then pitching shelters in front of a 50mph wind machine demonstrated just how capable these tents are in demanding conditions.

It was a powerful reminder that great equipment is about thoughtful engineering, not just specifications on a page.
Staff Perspective: Amy Redwood
“I’m really grateful that I got the opportunity to attend this year’s Outdoor & Social event in the beautiful Peak District. It was my first time taking part in something like this and I learned a huge amount, both from the brands themselves and from my Taunton Leisure colleagues.
I tested the new Rab Airox pack during a very blustery and muddy ascent of Mam Tor. I also particularly enjoyed the Black Diamond walking pole clinic, where we learned how they are designed and how to use them more effectively.

Spending time with Vango and Hilleberg helped me better understand the differences between the tents we sell and how to guide customers towards the right option.
The biggest highlight was cheering on my team mates as they pitched a Hilleberg tent in front of a 50mph industrial fan.”

“The Outdoor & Social event in the Peak District provided invaluable training and insight into some of my favourite brands we stock, including Hilleberg, Altra, Mountain Equipment and Paramo.
Getting hands-on experience with new products out on the hill was hugely beneficial. Learning directly from brand representatives means we can offer more informed and personalised advice in the Exeter store.
Pitching a Hilleberg tent in front of the wind machine was a real eye-opener. Despite the extreme conditions, it was surprisingly straightforward, which says a lot about the design and build quality.”

Staff Perspective: Chris Kennedy
“For me, the event was a brilliant opportunity to step away from the online side of the business and gain the kind of hands-on exposure our store teams experience more regularly.
Seeing the full tent ranges we stock, understanding differences in shape, materials and pitching techniques, and learning from brand specialists was genuinely valuable.
I particularly enjoyed the stove and fuel session, which highlighted how small adjustments can make a big difference to performance and safety. The water filtration workshops were equally insightful, reinforcing the importance of preparation and knowledge in the outdoors.

Mountain Equipment’s detailed presentation on down insulation testing and their upcoming seasonal range was another standout. It was also encouraging to speak with other retailers and hear their views on the market.
What made me most proud was how engaged our team were throughout the event. They asked thoughtful questions, took every opportunity to learn, and showed real enthusiasm for improving the experience we offer our customers.”

A Well-Organised Event in a Stunning Setting
The Peak District provided a fantastic backdrop for learning and testing equipment. The event was extremely well organised, with excellent access, great hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere that encouraged collaboration across the industry.
