Check out Ludo’s review of the Mountain Equipment Glace Hoody as he takes it for a spin on a not-so-sunny Dartmoor!

The Mountain Equipment Glace Hooded Top is a versatile piece of outdoor apparel. Perfect for a range of activities like hiking and multi-pitch climbing. It’s a fast-drying hooded top that can either be worn as a stand-alone layer or as part of a layering system!

I recently tested the Glace sun hoody during our staff trip to Dartmoor where I used it as a mid-layer.

It was my first time using a sun hoody sadly it wasn’t sunny enough to test its 50UPF protection! Since then I have worn it for when there is plenty of sunshine and it does the job really well.

The Fabrics

The first thing I noticed about this Mountain Equipment Hooded Top is its sleek and functional design. It is made from a lightweight, breathable fabric that feels comfortable against the skin, even during prolonged use.

The material is a blend of 13% polyester and 87% recycled polyester which offers excellent moisture-wicking properties, ensuring you stay dry and comfortable even in hot and humid conditions.

This fabric also features a 50 UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating, effectively shielding you from harmful UV rays, which is crucial during long days under the sun. It also has built-in HeiQ Fresh odour-neutralising technology; direct targeting of odour molecules which is a by-product of the food industry and is Bluesign-approved.

The HeiQ technology is one of the most environmentally promising approaches to fabric odour control. I can say from experience this works well. I tend to sweat easily and as soon as the fabric has dried the odour goes.

How it fits

The cut of the sun hoody is slim fit yet relaxed, providing ample room for movement making it an excellent choice for climbing, hiking, or any activity that requires a full range of motion. I usually wear my base layer and t-shirt in size M, I chose to wear the Glace in size L  as the M was really snug. The flatlock seams reduce chafing, adding to the overall comfort of the hoody.

Let’s talk about features

One of the standout features of the Mountain Equipment Glace Sun Hoody is its performance in diverse conditions. The fabric’s breathability and quick-drying capabilities make it ideal for both high-energy activities as well as leisurely walks. Whether you’re sweating up a steep trail or lounging by a lake, the sun hoody adapts to your needs, keeping you cool, dry and comfortable.

The hood is designed to fit comfortably under or over a climbing helmet without obstructing your vision. It provides additional sun protection for your neck and head.

A significant advantage of this hoody is its packability. It can be compressed into a really small size, making it easy to stow away in your backpack until needed. This makes it an excellent choice for unpredictable weather conditions or multi-day trips where space and weight are considerations. It will definitely be a part of my kit for my September cycling trip in France.

If one feature I feel is missing it’s a thumb loop. It would extend the coverage of the sleeve on a part of the hands.

Mountain Equipment is known for its robust gear, and the Glace sun hoody is no exception. The fabric feels durable, resisting pilling and abrasion even after extended use. The hoody retains its shape and performance characteristics through multiple washes, maintaining its new look and feel.

My Thoughts

The Mountain Equipment sun hoody is a great choice for anyone seeking a reliable, comfortable, and versatile sun protection garment or as an extra layer. Its thoughtful design, excellent fabric, and practical features make it a valuable addition to any outdoor enthusiast’s wardrobe.

Whether you’re climbing, hiking, running or just enjoying the outdoors, this hoody provides the protection and comfort you need to make the most of your adventures. With its combination of performance, durability, and style, the Mountain Equipment sun hoody stands out as a must-have piece of gear for both serious adventurers and casual outdoor lovers alike.
