Follow Sam from the Exeter Shop as he takes a trip across parts of the South-West and tests out one of Rab’s finest insulated jackets.

Rab has become renowned for producing high-quality products for clients with high expectation and the Rab Valiance is no exception. Combining a high quality down jacket and a waterproof coat, the Valiance is set to be one of the best options for fighting off those winter days.

OVERVIEW

The Valiance’s outer shell is made from a durable lightweight Pertex Sheild with fully taped seams to provide the wearer with full protection from the rain. Lying beneath this high-quality outer is an 800-fill power goose down, coated in hydrophobic treatment that has been developed in conjunction with Nikwax allowing the wearer to rest in the knowledge that if by chance the elements get through you won’t be losing any loft and the jacket will continue to keep you cosy.

The Jacket contains 800fp hydrophobic down and utilizes a Pertex shield, waterproof membrane.

INTERESTING FEATURES

The Valiance comes with a fully helmet-compatible hood with a useful stiffened peak, the goose down, however, doesn’t extend to the Valiance’s hood or on to the cuffs of the jacket. Instead, they have opted for synthetic insulation that Rab has named Pyrotec. This is because when the inevitable rain comes, it’s the hood that gets wet first. With constant bad weather, there is a chance that eventually the water might seep through to the down, by using Pyrotec, Rab have minimised the impact this will have on the warmth of the jacket and it will reduce the drying time as well.

You also get adjustable Velcro cuffs, adjustable waist elastic and YKK zip closures. Offering large pockets for storage and enough space for your hands even when wearing thick winter gloves. Even offering an internal pocket for items such as your phone or wallet.

MY EXPERIENCE

I have been lucky enough to own and enjoy the Rab Valiance for the past few months and have found it to be as home in the depths of Dartmoor as it is on the wet and windy commutes to work.

One damp and gusty day a friend and I decided to make the trip to Lydford Gorge, a National Trust site known to be in a world of its own. Our walk to the base of Lydford Gorge and to the foot of White Lady, a 28-metre waterfall towering far above us and an outstanding sight to behold.

Even in the harsh weather conditions and unrelenting spray, the Valiance continued to perform keeping us warm and dry throughout our trip. It’s Pertex outer held up to the punishment of a long-wet walk showing little signs of giving up, while the 800fp Goose Down continued to keep me warm throughout the day.

Once back at the car it was ideal to only have one layer to take off and throw in the boot before making a mad dash for the cockpit.

CONCLUSION

The Valiance is the perfect companion for anyone looking for a great all-around jacket. A great garment for that wild commute to work or that cold day standing by the rugby pitch the Valiance will ensure you stay warm and dry throughout.
