Follow Martha from Taunton Leisure HQ as she takes on Montane’s lightweight, technical fleece and gives it a proper test on the Affric-Kintail way.

Producing lightweight and breathable outdoor clothing and gear has become something that Montane has become well known for, they have worked for over 25 years with mountain professionals to produce industry-leading products. The popular Protium Fleece has been updated for the new Autumn/Winter 2022 season, and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to put this fleece through its paces whilst walking the Affric Kintail Way in Scotland in September. A warm and comfortable versatile layer is essential for a multi-day walk such as this, especially in the Scottish Highlands where the weather can be very changeable!

The Women’s Protium Fleece is an adaptable layer for use throughout the year, it is ideal to use as either an outer layer in warmer temperatures or as part of your layering system in colder climates. Featuring a THERMO GRID brushed-backed material that feels comfortable against the skin, as well as efficiently regulating both heat and moisture to keep you comfortable on the move and whilst at rest. This material also has a 4-way stretch for freedom of movement and is lightweight and packable so can be easily stashed in a small day pack and saves space when packed in a larger rucksack. A snugly fitting hood with a high chin helps to keep the warmth in, with the additional benefit of the hood fitting comfortably under a helmet if required. The full-length YKK VISLON front zip helps to make this fleece versatile and allows for adequate heat management whether being used as an outer layer or as a layering piece. To safely store your essentials and keep your hands warm, two YKK zipped hand pockets can be found on the sides of the fleece. The low profile flat locked seams and hems found throughout the fleece, inside and out, help to reduce friction and chafing when worn under outer layers as well as keeping it comfortable against the skin.

On my recent trip to Scotland to walk the Affric Kintail Way, the Women’s Protium Fleece was the ideal piece to accompany me. The weather conditions during my time there were variable, so to have an adaptable fleece that can be used as a stand-alone outer layer and as part of a layering system was essential. The Protium Fleece was quick and easy to pull on when taking a break from walking and kept me plenty warm, especially when fully zipped up with the hood up. During the cooler and wetter evenings, it fit well under the Montane Women’s Antifreeze XT Hoodie and the Women’s Spirit Jacket and felt comfortable and non-restrictive. The soft and stretchy grid-backed inner feels soft to the touch, and this was especially pleasant with the tightly fitting hood helping to lock in the heat. The well-finished and low-profile hems and seams on the Protium Fleece give a real feel of longevity and I can imagine this fleece will last me for many years of adventures.

Overall, the Women’s Protium Fleece would be a great option for anyone who needs a lightweight but versatile and warm layer. It is suitable for a wide range of activities from walking and hiking to climbing and skiing, and effectively manages and regulates moisture and heat whilst exercising or at rest. The close fit of the fleece is comfortable for outdoor pursuits and the stretch of the material ensures a free range of movement whatever you are up too. I would really recommend this fleece if you are looking for a reliable, durable, and lightweight layer that won’t let you down when you are out on your adventures.
