Staff Review: Mountain Equipment Arrow Jacket

Gemma from the Taunton store takes on Mountain Equipment’s highly adaptable jacket and gives her thoughts.

Over the last few months I’ve had the pleasure of trying out the mountain equipment arrow jacket. The Jacket is 182g double weaved fabric, with a lofted inner and is wind resistant, wicking and above all super comfortable. This jacket is the perfect summer/ transitional jacket and is perfect as that extra layer for climbing and underneath a waterproof. I was fortunate to try this jacket in north Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and even on my home soil on the South Downs national park. If I’m being honest, I’m mainly wearing it underneath my motorbike jacket as it gives the perfect amount of temperature control whilst riding. Each time the jacket performed extremely well and become a new staple to my outdoor gear.

Fit

The first thing when trying on the jacket was how light it was, weighing in as a whole at 300g it almost felt like I wasn’t wearing an extra layer at all. The fabric is stretchy but not too clingy but did give a nice shape and athletic fit. A thing I did really like about the jacket was that the branding wasn’t too ‘in your face’ with the logo on the left chest pocket but still subtle enough to know you’re wearing a trusted brand. The accents of the orange on the zips was also a nice pop of colour as it took away from the usual all blue or all black looks you can get with some outdoor gear.

Pockets

Whilst wearing the jacket I was confident that I was going to stay warm as well as knowing that any excess sweat was going to be wicked away. As a person who can go very cold to very hot in a very short amount of time this was a great feature for me as it made the jacket versatile. Although I did not personally store anything within the pockets, they were large enough to hold your hands in and maybe even a cheeky snack!
The top pocket was a perfect compass sized pocket as well as for the climbers, possible walnuts and carabiners.

Aftercare

I found the best way to wash this jacket was in a Nikwax Basewash. This helps with keeping the garment in top condition as well as ensuring the garment can still wick and most important smell delightful. Using normal detergent would make the jacket retain any moisture on the inside of the jacket making you feel clammy incredibly quickly. After washing, the jacket felt as good as new and was ready to take on the elements with me once more.

Final thoughts

When I first saw the jacket, I didn’t think I would need something like it, but the Arrow has genuinely changed the way I think about mid layers and windproof jackets. I’ve come to love the jacket and I look forward to wearing it in the future.
