Staff Review: Salomon Women’s X Ultra 4 GTX Hiking Shoe

Follow Gemma from the Taunton Shop as she takes a stroll through muddy fields in Salomon’s NEW X Ultra 4.

So over the last couple of lockdowns, I’ve had the pleasure of using and reviewing the new women’s Salomon X Ultra’s. As a forever outdoorsy person, I’ve always managed to put shoes through their paces. And lucky for you guys I’m also blessed with some “duck feet.” For those of you wondering what that is, it means they’re super wide towards the bridge and delightfully flat... meaning if I’m to get any pain whilst walking it’s on the outer sides. Growing up I really struggled to find shoes that fit, and much to my parent's delight the only school shoes that were comfy were Clark’s shoes in an e width. And other ones I just fell out the sides of... I’m looking at you, dolly shoes!
So as you can tell, I was honestly a little apprehensive to try these out at first, but it was also a good opportunity to give them a run for their money......

Now with the Salomon X Ultra’s, some people know that they already make a men’s version, it’s great, it’s black and looks delightful. But when it comes to us ladies, there’s not really an alternative. This is where these bad boys come in!
Made with a Gore-Tex lining, they’re designed to help keep you dry in those muddy and wet terrains... and with the elastics red laces, a classic Salomon touch. It means you can get the tightness “just right” without feeling like your foot is going to suffocate or cut off its blood supply (we’ve all been there!)
As a wide footed wonder, a big thing I struggle with is finding shoes that fit the widest part, but I’m also not exceedingly wide at the heel. This is where Salomon really shines. It uses something called an asymmetric fit. Meaning it’s wider around your toes and it hugs onto your heel. This means you’re not going to get squished over toes, or blisters from having too much volume in your walk. (it’s where your feet move in your shoes.) do from me so far, the Salomons get a good thumbs up.

Now moving onto the design. They’re not overly chunky, and super light. Having wide feet is bad enough without looking like your feet are literal boats! Another thing I’ve found useful is that, even though they’re light and slender looking, I have experienced little to no pain from them! The only time I did was right at the end of a walk but honestly, I think that’s mainly due to walking on some pretty uneven ground (if you know about Ilminster’s hill you’ll understand why!!)
But don’t let that fool you... over the lockdowns they’ve been taken over the Somerset levels on nearly a daily basis and especially this time of year... it hasn’t been dry! There has been very little wear on the crease points by my toes and my classic places where shoes go around the heels have stayed fully intact!

Overall. I’m really pleased with these shoes. If you haven’t guessed already I’m completely raving about them! Before when people used to come into the store with wide feet like myself I’d always swing them to the classic wide fit shoes. But honestly, I think that Salomon has really changed the game and I’m so glad that they’ve released these shoes, giving more options for us wide footed outdoor ladies!
So good job Salomon. You get my seal of approval

Please note: We carry these shoe in the black and opal blue colourway as apposed to the pink colourway shown.
