Staff Review: Salomon Men’s X Ultra 4 GTX Hiking Shoes

Read up on Sam from the Exeter Store’s thoughts on Salomon’s new high tech walking trainer.

The X Ultra collection has been made up of top selling hiking shoes for the past few years. Thanks to premium materials and features the X Ultra range has consistently delivered high performance as well as unrivalled durability and is well renowned in the outdoor community. The X Ultra 4 will be no exception, the all-new design has taken inspiration from Salomon’s trail running shoes to offer a light weight, stable hiking alternative.

X Ultra-1
First Impressions
The X Ultra 4 is lighter and more agile than its predecessor. The most obvious change is in the shoes aesthetic, the style has been updated, with a cleaner and sleeker look. A change we have seen in Salomon’s trail running shoes as they evolve. Although a little sceptical about the looks of this shoe when I first saw it they have really grown on me over the past few months. I especially like the fact that the shoe looks sleek and tidy with only the essentials visible on the outer.
The biggest change to the shoe’s performance comes from the new ADV Chassis, which has been engineered to maintain stability, control, and protection of the outer foot. This change has also helped them to reduce the weight by 14g.
The new ADV Chassis performs amazingly, the X Ultra 4 feels stable and controlled even on the uneven, rocky terrain of my local common. These changes that have been designed to improve the shoes stability have not limited the mobility of the shoe like I expected.
Get ready to power through uphill’s and descents with the updated X-ULTRA 4 GTX no matter the terrain or weather. The Contagrip® MA outsole grabs the terrain and has no problems on wet, slippery, and uneven terrain. The Lugs are designed to provide deep penetration and the multi-directional grip provides optimal traction on soft surfaces like mud or loose dirt. The improved soles also offer long-term durability on harder surfaces.
I have really enjoyed the feeling you get when tackling different conditions in these shoes, even in wet situations the Contagrip sole offers great traction and has given me the confidence to tackle anything I find on route.
Active Support is another exciting feature the mobile wings on the external side of the shoe help hold the foot in place while accompanying its movement and adapting to its shape and volume. This feature was extremely noticeable when on uneven or sloped ground, my foot felt secure and well held even when descending steep slopes. It also gave the impression that the shoe had been designed for you personally because of the way the shoe adapts to your individual foot shape offering a comfortable and supportive experience.

Final Thoughts
I have really enjoyed the X ULTRA 4, as someone who has always had Salomon walking boots I felt very at home in these shoes. Anyone looking to make the jump from the X ultra 4’s predecessor can do so with the knowledge that the fit hasn’t changed. I was impressed with the level of comfort they provided as well as the traction they gave me.
With the Gore-tex membrane providing optimal waterproofing I was comfortable tackling all sorts of conditions and often found them replacing my walking boots for certain walks. This was due to the reliability and comfort. It is a shame that due to Lock down 3 I was unable to take them further afield.
However, once we can head back out, I’m looking forward to doing a comparison review looking at these and the ON Cloudventure Waterproof to compare them side by side in a more challenging environment.
I have loved using them on many of the local commons and footpaths and would highly recommend them to ay one looking for a new walking shoe that comes with all the perks of your favourite trail shoe.
For owners of the X Ultra 3 this is an obvious upgrade and one you will not want to miss.

Please note: We hold this shoe in the different black colourway to the white ones shown.
