Staff Review: On Cloudventure Trail Running Shoes

Sam from the Exeter Store takes this lightweight trail runner for a spin through the woods of Devon and gives us his views.

The On Cloudventure is a neutral running shoe that's great for runners who want to take to the trail while staying comfortable and secure. Over a few weeks before the lockdown and during my once daily exercise outings, I've had the pleasure of trying out the On Cloudventure. A lightweight trail shoe, that's big on comfort and grip.

Created in the Swiss Alps the ON Cloudventure weighs just 295g making it nice and light while still offering optimal off-road grip and comfort. Offering ONs Missiongrip™ sole, that combines multiple grip patterns that explore both traction and abrasion on each of its “clouds” – the airy hollow lugs on the sole of the shoe. These clouds provide a multidirectional tread that will keep you in control on the trail.

On’s Cloud is the staple of the company, providing multi-directional cushioning that adapts to the running conditions. Not only producing grip on loose terrain but also cushioning that constantly changes to help keep you comfortable no matter the environment.

Below the Clouds is On’s injection moulded springboard, combined with the cloud this gives the wearer a cushioned landing with a firm take off making sure no energy is lost. The speed board also doubles as a rock shield to stop any damage to the base of your feet.

A technical mesh upper engineered from two-layer mesh provides the optimal ventilation for a cooling airflow this keeps you cool even on tough climbs. While the inner layer offers a soft-step in and support for optimal comfort on those long runs.

My Experience

While on a run through the thick woodland joining Gittisham and Sidmouth in Devon, I was able to put the Cloudventures to the test. The challenging conditions and changing terrain meant that I got to test the Missiongrip™ soles in a variety of situations. I was extremely impressed with how the shoe gripped on the soft mud and the wet leaves that covered the woodland floor.

The mesh upper offered great airflow through the shoes to keep your feet cool, the ventilation on this shoe is fantastic, even at a walking pace, the airflow in the shoe is noticeable. I was also surprised by the level of comfort the Cloudventure offered even on a long and difficult run. I felt that the constantly adapting multi-directional clouds kept me comfortable and cushioned while the springboard allowed me to deliver maximum power of the long climbs.

Overall, I was extremely impressed with the Cloudventures The use of ON’s Missiongrip soles and Clouds makes for an incredibly responsive and adaptive shoe. The combination of these things creates the perfect shoes for trail running, that also offers enough cushion for any unavoidable road running situations. The Cloudventure is everything you could need from a trail shoe and I would recommend you give them a go!
