Rab: The Mountain People

With one of the highest reputations in the industry, it’s time you knew more about this innovative British gear maker.

With one of the very best reputation in the outdoor industry, Rab have grown from humble beginnings to become one of the world’s most well known outdoor gear makers. Their heritage in climbing and mountaineering is still today what inspires them to make some of the most innovative and high quality down garments and sleeping bags used by the world’s most intrepid explorers, experienced athletes and nature film crews in the world’s harshest environments.

We’re going to take some time to explore some of just what makes this iconic British brand tick and show you just what separates Rab from the rabble.

Our Story - Rab® US

Founder, Rab Carrington on Cerro Torre in Patagonia, late 1970s.

A Little History

Rab’s story began in 1981 in Sheffield, Yorkshire. In the attic of a small, terraced house Rab Carrington made the first sleeping bag to bear his name. He was sick of sub par gear which was readily available at the time and felt that he could do better. Hand stitched and devised with his own ingenious eye, Rab’s experience from years spent in the mountains was apparent in his design, and soon there was popular demand both from friends and the local climbing community.

Once word had spread, that humble attic became a factory floor, creating sleeping bags and jackets for customers far and wide. Now, decades later, those honest, hard wearing designs can be found all over the world; wherever adventurous individuals face up to the elements. From the very harshest of Himilayan peaks to cold evenings around the campfire.

Today, Rab are ceaseless in their commitment to their own exacting standards, ingenuity and pioneering spirit. They make tough, high performing mountain clothing and equipment that offer absolute protection, comfort and freedom on the hill, crag or peak. Their use of cutting edge materials and proven, premium quality European duck down is testament to their design process and high standards. First and foremost however, Rab do not see their products as fancy and over engineered – just hard working, honest pieces that you’d rather repair than replace.

Responsible Down Innovation

It has been over 30 years since the first Rab sleeping bag was hand cut, sewn and filled. As a brand with some of the best down products available on the market, down has become synonymous with Rab’s image and heritage. They take great pride in making sure all of their virgin down used within their sleeping bags and jackets is ethically sourced from within Europe. All the way from farm to factory, every stage of the process is certified by the Responsible down standard (RDS) which many other outdoor brands have come to adopt since. Rab chose this scheme as it is the most robust and transparent scheme available.

Rab recognise the enormous responsibility now now placed on the outdoor clothing industry and are constantly seeking ways to increase their positive impact and continue to minimise negative environmental impact.

Not Just Down

Anybody well acquainted with Rab’s intrepid range is aware of that they also have an absolutely excellent range of waterproof and technical clothing making use of the industry’s best technologies such as Gore-Tex waterproof linings, Polygiene anti-odour technology and YKK zips. Their own in house technologies are also some of the finest on the market such as their very special Cirrus synthetic insulation which is a great alternative to down in wetter environments. Their Motiv fabrics used on their synthetic baselayers, designed to be lightweight, fast drying and very durable makes for excellent hardworking bases, great for hard days on the hill and work perfectly when coupled with Polygiene weaves to stop you getting to smelly.

There is a fantastically wide range of Rab clothing in our selection which we are very proud to be holding and know that the right Rab garment will make any outing into the unknown comfortable.
