Dissecting Patagonia’s Eco-Clothing

We take three of Patagonia’s products and break down exactly what goes into their eco, Fairtrade production.

With the arrival of their new season for Autumn and Winter, Patagonia are as ever striving to create superb products for the outdoors in as eco-friendly a manner as they can. Being a rather large manufacturer however means of course that this is not at all simple! With the amount of items Patagonia produce, how can they possibly minimise their footprint? Today we’ll be taking three of our favourite Patagonia products from the Taunton Leisure range and breaking them down to give you an idea of the immense work Patagonia put in to their production to ensure ethical, eco-friendly products that perform to a superb standard. Making a return this year we see the ever popular Torrentshell 3L Jackets, Down Sweater Hoodies, and Retro-Pile Fleece jackets. With these 3 popular jackets being excellent for the chillier, more intrepid months ahead, do they live up to Patagonia’s famously high eco standards?

The Patagonia Retro Pile Jacket

A firm favourite with our customers, this is the perfect retro-inspired fleece jacket for the coming autumn and winter months. The jacket is made using 100% polyester sourced from plastic bottles. Not only does this not put more plastic on the planet but also reduces Co2 emissions by 59% when compared with virgin polyester fibre. The dyes and materials used in this jacket are bluesign approved. Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in their materials supply chain, and to assist with managing chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers. Top top it off this jacket is Fairtrade certified, ensuring those who make it are properly compensated for their craftsmanship.

The Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Waterproof Jacket

A tough and ready waterproof jacket which neatly packs down ready for when you need it. With the wetter months on their way, this is a great solution to sudden showers. The Torrentshell 3L Waterproof jacket is a fantastic all rounder great for both everyday and long days out on the hill or trail. Similarly to other Patagonia products we have a bluesign seal of approval as well as Fairtrade certification. The ECONYL outer is made using 100% recycled nylon ensuring both a nature-friendly stance but also optimal durability which is key to a long lasting product. When paired with the H2No membrane, it makes for a great long lasting jacket which will last countless adventures before needing to be replaced. Loathe to disposable clothing and the impact it has on the environment, Patagonia ensure that their products are very long lasting.

The Patagonia Down Sweater Hoody

A winter essential, a good insulated jacket requires effective heat trapping abilities and a decent water-resistant outer fabric which can stand up to the scuffs and scrapes of the outdoors. The 100% Recycled Polyester ripstop outer ensures that the jacket can stand up to snagging thorns and rough granite (though should always still be taken) while remaining a far superior alternative to virgin polyester and its impact on the planet. The down within the jacket is fully traceable, this is of immense importance as it ensures that the down was sourced as a bi-product of the meat industry and not plucked from live birds (a practice still sadly performed in places). This also ensures a higher quality of down which we expect from quality brands. Patagonia knows that every producer of down goods should be held responsible for where it sources its down and the animal welfare that comes with it. The Down Sweater hoody is also fairtrade and bluesign approved.
