The NEW Rab Kaon Jacket: First Impressions.

Dave from the Exeter Shop takes a look at Rab’s new super versatile and super lightweight insulative jacket.

Rab describe themselves as masters of insulation, their jackets are some of the most renowned of any brand and have been taken to some of the world’s harshest environments,  however they have done something a bit different with the Kaon. My first thought was that this was another variation of every other lighter down jacket, but they have created something unique. There were many reasons for my excitement to try this jacket; versatility, style, price and a curiosity to how it fits into the UK non-alpinist market. I am 6ft 2 and around an average build. With most Rab products I’m somewhere between a medium and a large, depending on whether I want a technical or comfy fit. With the Kaon, I went for a large feeling that when I’m reaching up to a hold while climbing, a medium would ride up but the Kaon being a large, there isn’t any unwanted bagginess.

The first thing that I noticed once the jacket was in my hands was the weight. As a reasonably large gent, I’m used to my garments having some weight to them, but the Kaon weighs next to nothing. Once packed into its stuff sack it’s about the same size as a litre water bottle and weighs a quarter of the amount, at a little over 250g.

My second curiosity was the versatility that Rab claim. After some outings before the current isolation measures, I am happy to back up their claim. The Kaon provides warmth in the cold and seems to prevent from over-heating in everything but the hottest temperatures. On a walk pre isolation, starting on a cold windy reservoir before moving up to woodland and then open moorland, I didn’t take the jacket off and kept it on the whole walk. As someone who generally runs warm this was a bit of a shock. On a local bouldering mission, the jacket provided warmth in the wind whilst resting up and didn’t hinder climbing once moving.

My initial concerns solely rest with the lightweight Atmos fabric. Being someone who is tough on equipment and rubbing up on sharp crystalized Dartmoor granite, I’m not sure how long the outer fabric will hold up, but time will tell. Due to the size and weight I would not hesitate to take the jacket on every outing. I’m very much looking forward to getting the Rab Kaon on some sea cliff multi-pitch missions and many more adventures through the summer once the country is fit and healthy again. More to come….
