Updated Design and Models<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For 2025, Osprey <\/a>has refined and remodelled their best-selling Talon and Tempest range of packs, and we\u2019re going to take a look at them in greater detail below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Osprey Says<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the most versatile technical pack series ever created, the Talon\/Tempest is designed to accommodate dynamic body movement, whether you\u2019re on foot, bike, skis or board. A BioStretch harness, continuous-wrap hip belt and an injection-moulded, die-cut foam AirScape\u2122 back panel move with you on the most technical terrain.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

We also stock the \u2018Talon and Tempest Pro\u2019 options in the 40-litre size, which are upgraded versions targeted towards users who require more durability, thanks to upgrades in fabrics and components. These have been in the market for a few years, and the new standard Talon and Tempest models lean heavily on the design and build of the Pro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Osprey has also introduced an Extended Fit (plus-size) version of the Talon and Tempest 22, which we stock, so really, there should be a Talon or Tempest version for everyone to enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choosing the Right Capacity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Talon 11 and 22 and Tempest 11 and 22 litre models are the everyday hiking options. Both will easily carry the basics you need for any walk, anywhere. They also have several stuff pockets and compartments to help you divide the load and keep essentials close to hand. We really like the simplicity of the one zip-opening compartment for easy access to your gear on a pack this size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main difference between the 33 and 44-litre packs and the smaller versions is the introduction of a lid with several compartments rather than the zip opening. The 33 and 44-litre sizes are more suitable for either winter days where you may need to carry a group shelter, several warm layers, a stove and more food and drink, or overnights where a sleeping bag, sleep mat and tent are introduced into the equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re into ultralight backpacking, then the 33-litre version could definitely handle this easily, as the capacity is very generous. The 44 is cavernous and adds a lightweight frame to support the back system due to its aim to carry more weight, more comfortably. We\u2019ve consistently noticed that all Osprey packs are massive for their stated size.
Many staff and customers alike have been happy to use the 44 for multi-day hikes in all sorts of conditions \u2013 it really is that good. With respective weights of 1.25kg and 1.5kg, the weight penalty for carrying the bigger sizes is fairly minimal, even if you don\u2019t have them packed out full.<\/p>\n\n\n

AirScape Back System<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The new Talon and Tempest packs all use an ergonomically shaped AirScape back panel made of injection-moulded, die-cut foam overlaid with light mesh. This keeps the load close to your body, with airflow channels providing some ventilation.
The new models of 11, 22, and 33 litres now come in one size only, but with a wide-ranging adjustable back. The 44-litre comes in two back lengths: S\/M and M\/L. We suggest if you are over 5ft 10, then the M\/L will be most suitable.<\/p>\n\n\n

This back system has one key advantage over a suspended AirSpeed back system like the Exos series uses \u2013 stability. Some walkers feel that a suspended air back system affects their balance due to the weight in the pack being carried further away, especially if they are using it for scrambling or walking on steeper, more technical terrain. The AirScape back system solves this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BioStretch Harness and Hip Belt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Talon\u2019s harness and hip belt, which together form a system called BioStretch, are designed to move with your body and provide optimal stability. The lumbar section, hip belt and back system are almost seamless, meaning that it wraps snugly around your hips and lower back. This allows the system to move as you do, minimises the risk of rubbing and improves the carry comfort of the pack as the weight increases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The harness and hip belt are comprised of SpacerMesh over die-cut foam for ventilation, providing the perfect balance of airy breathability and support. The Crossbody ErgoPull system allows you to adjust the hip belt to the minutest degree of tension, providing even more carry comfort than you might think possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability at the Forefront<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

All the packs across the entire range of sizes are made with 100% recycled and bluesign\u00ae-approved high-tenacity nylon, treated with a PFAS-free DWR. The frame sheet is 100% recycled and the foams are 50% recycled. This really is a significant effort from Osprey to mitigate the environmental impact of their production of these packs \u2013 which can only be a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staff Reviews of the 2025 Osprey Talon & Tempest 33 Packs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, Rich\u2019s thoughts as he takes the Talon 33 on a trek through the Devon countryside:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Osprey Talon 33 has been a pleasant surprise. Despite its 33-litre capacity, it feels incredibly spacious, easily holding everything I needed for a 13-mile hike along the River Otter in Devon \u2013 plus extra gear to properly test it out. Thoughtful design features like the stretchy mesh front panel, multiple pockets, and compression straps made packing simple and kept everything stable on the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the trail, the pack felt comfortable and unobtrusive. Its slim profile made navigating kissing gates and wooded paths effortless, and it was compact enough to avoid knocking anything over in a narrow farm shop \u2013 always a bonus. The hip belt and shoulder straps distributed weight well, preventing any strain on my old shoulder injury, and the breathable back panel meant no lingering sweat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I had to nitpick, the pack doesn\u2019t stand up well when placed on the ground, but that\u2019s a minor issue. What really stands out is its adaptability. Within its 33-litre limit, it works as a generous day pack or a lightweight overnight bag for wild camping. For my first trip with the Talon 33, I took it on an overnight wild camp on Dartmoor and was genuinely impressed by how much gear it could hold. It easily fit my tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, cooking gear, camera kit, spare layers, food and more, all while remaining comfortable and stable on rugged terrain. The hip pockets were particularly handy and easy to access while hiking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After testing the Osprey Tempest 33 over the past couple of weeks \u2013 on a day hike across the moors, a trip to the seafront, and a visit to the climbing gym \u2013 I\u2019m seriously impressed. I used to think a cheap bag would do the same job, but this pack has completely changed my mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the first wear, the difference in comfort was obvious. The cushioned shoulder straps and mesh hip belt made carrying weight effortless, and I never felt the need to take the bag off for a break. The adjustable continuous-wrap harness and hip belt provided a perfect fit, which was a game-changer for me as someone on the smaller side. The AirScape back panel also stood out, keeping me cool even on steep climbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Osprey describes the Tempest 33 as \u201clight and fast,\u201d and I completely agree. It feels incredibly lightweight, and the streamlined design moves with you rather than feeling like a bulky block on your back. Storage is another highlight \u2013 plenty of space for extra layers, food and personal items, with multiple stash pockets for water bottles, a hydration sleeve, and a front mesh pocket for quick access to a raincoat. The hip belt pockets were also a great addition for snacks and essentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite its lightweight feel, the pack is tough and has handled various conditions without showing wear. My only gripe is the lack of a rain cover, but that\u2019s an easy fix. Overall, the Tempest 33 is a fantastic, durable and versatile pack that I\u2019d recommend to anyone looking for a reliable day or overnight hiking bag.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
