what gas do you need for the vango gas lantern / and the make for gas used thanks for your help

Hi thanks for your question, the Vango Gas Lantern ( and the stove also) uses a standard screw type cartridge attachment. Many brands are sold under this type, not just in the UK either. We sell Coleman like this for example http://www.tauntonleisure.com/coleman-c250-cartridge-available-in-store-only/p3682. Available in store only. It does not fit Campingaz ones though as they use a different type only usable with their own appliances.

Hi - is the mantle the usual gas type that goes brittle once lit? If it is, the lantern would not be of use on a sailing boat - I await your reply, thanks.

Thanks for your question, yes in common with other gas lanterns the mantle goes to ash once primed so is can be brittle if shaken or touched with match etc, although this lantern has peizo ignition. I've not got any experience of using on a boat sorry but it sounds like you are aware of a problem with this type of light for that use, it does however come with a generous 6 mantles if that helps - other lanterns often only come with 1.
