If you have any space at the ends it will allow the sole to curve upwards, away from the hold you are trying to stand on. The curved surface it creates will not give a secure, positive grip and thus allow the foot to slide off. You should aim for a fit which makes the toes arch slightly probably feeling unfamiliar to all but Ballerinas, whilst not curl all the way up and be painful, but put the shoe in tension by stretching it. This way the pressure from the toes is pressed directly onto the holds and give a good level of grip. As you progress you will probably opt for tighter fits at the sacrifice of comfort, to gain greater precision and purchase. The width of the shoe should be roughly as tight as the length but you need to get both right and this is down to trying different styles. Generally, laces as opposed to Velcro closures will give better width adjustment. The rubbers used on today's rock shoes are all soft and sticky, and are far gripper than that on most everyday shoes or boots. This allows for friction to be higher and allow better grip on smaller or smoother holds. The fit is most important, as with a climbing harness, to allow you to concentrate on climbing without distraction. Don't let rumours about brands of rubber make you worry about which rubber you have on your chosen shoe to begin with, as you will start off on big enough holds for friction to be a secondary consideration.
